Making Democracy Work

Cameron's Corner

Notes from our Summer Intern - Cameron Smith

Week One Thoughts

I guess I should start off with who I am, and why I am blogging. My name is Cameron Smith. I attend Clyde C. Miller Career Academy where I will be a senior in the fall. I work with many organizations and have many extracurricular activities. I am on the policy debate team, mock trial team, and I am Vice President of our local FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) organization- just to name a few. I am I interested in political science, and business. I plan to attend either University of Michigan or DePaul University to study political science and get a degree in law and minor in business management administration.
This summer, I am an intern at The League of Women Voters of St. Louis. One of my jobs here is to produce the Voters Guide to help people get more clarity on their choices of candidates and issues on the ballots in St. Louis City, St. Louis County, St. Charles County, Jefferson County, Franklin County, Lincoln County, and Warren County. I will also work on candidate forums and help out with the citizens' hotline.

In my first week at LWV (League of Women Voters), I was acclimated to how things worked and the history of the LWV. I actually enjoyed reading information on the program. You can check out the history and even look at literature online. I attended a meeting with producers of Channel 9 news, the St. Louis Beacon and staff from KWMU radio station. There we discussed a forum with candidates (L. Clay, C. Britton, and R. Carnahan) running for the soon to be 1st U.S. Congressional district. I found this to be the highlight of my week, because it was my first business meeting with real professionals planning a huge event. I learned about minor details of how things will be set up including how long people have to speak, how many people should attend, and even how the intro and conclusion of the program will be said word for word. Also I gained knowledge on how to solicit cooperation among organizations, and about the executive decisions that have to be made in order to get the deal. I saw how difficult it was for local big name groups to cope with each others demands in order to make a great program for the citizens.
